California Recycles Does Cord, Cable, and Wire Recycling

If you have a drawer full of old cords you don’t use, consider recycling them. California Recycles does wire recycling for free, so bring us your old cords.

Wire Recycling with California Recycles

Every home in California has one: a drawer or shelf full of old cords to long-gone smartphones, e-book readers, MP3 players, and every other device imaginable. Many probably have not been used for years, as device designers change their docking ports all the time. Those cords are not doing you any good, but that doesn’t mean they can’t do good. California Recycles performs cord and wire recycling. We take the useful metal out of the cords, so manufacturers can use it to produce new goods. This requires much less energy than mining for new metals and reduces the amount of waste that ends up in landfills.

Why Recycle Wires and Cords?

Electronic waste is a big problem. Only about 20% of e-waste is ever recycled; the rest ends up in landfills, or it sits and collects dust in closets and cupboards until somebody takes the initiative … and dumps it in a landfill.

Most people know they’re not supposed to discard batteries, fluorescent bulbs, computers, and TVs with regular trash, but cables, cords, and wires are e-waste, too. They may not contain mercury or cadmium like light bulbs and batteries, and they don’t take up much space like TVs, but cords should be taken to an e-waste recycler like California Recycles.

The plastic or rubber insulation around cords will take centuries to degrade in a landfill, but the real reason to recycle cords is to harvest the copper wire within. Almost every electronic device and home appliance makes use of copper wire. Since copper resists corrosion, it is easy to reuse in manufacturing. We sort cords and strip the insulation ourselves, so you don’t need to worry about just what cords you’re bringing us—stick them all in a bag, and we’ll take care of the rest.

All Cords Are Welcome

We accept all kinds of cords and cables.

Power cords

Phone cords

Ethernet cables

Coaxial cables

Charging cords

In short, you can recycle any cord that plugs into the wall or a device. There’s no need to strip your cords beforehand; bring them to us, and our wire recycling team will prepare them to return to the manufacturing stream.

Our recycling center is in the Northridge region of Greater Los Angeles. We’re open five days a week, and you can drop off most items for free. Not just cords, but computers, TVs, mobile devices, and just about every electronic equipment you can think of. Please note that some items, such as kitchen appliances, we accept only for a fee.

So please, gather your unneeded charging cords and cables, put your old TV in the trunk, and come visit us. We’ll be happy to take your electronic waste out of your hands.
